RIGHT TO DEFER HOMESTEAD TAXES EXTENDED TO DISABLED VETS

A bill has been passed by the Texas House of Representatives giving disabled veterans the same rights as those over 65 to defer property taxes on their homestead. Under present law, if you are over 65 and you own and occupy a residence homestead, you are entitled to defer a collection of a tax, abate a suit to collect a delinquent tax or abate a sale to foreclose a tax lien. This bill gives disabled veterans the same rights as someone over 65.

Many seniors are unaware that they can defer property taxes until they die whereby their heirs would be responsible for the taxes (including any accrued interest). This is particularly important for those on fixed incomes who are not interested in a reverse mortgage.
