The anxiety and desperation one feels when faced with a spouse''s aging or illness can be overwhelming. Take the case of the Lemmermans. Gloralie Lemmerman, 76, was recovering from a stroke and faced imminent discharge from a Lewisburg, Pennsylvania nursing home. Distressed because he did not know how he was going to take care of his wife and pay for her medical care, Carl Lemmerman, 80, visited her private room at the nursing home on September 25, 2000. Using a low caliber handgun he took both their lives.
