New SS-4 (Application for EIN) Form Allows for Third-Party Designee

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a new form SS-4 that obviates the need to complete Form 2848, the IRS power of attorney form. The SS-4 is used to apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) and is employed by estate planners setting up irrevocable trusts. The new SS-4 includes a box to name a third-party designee who is authorized to receive the entity's EIN and answer questions about the completion of the SS-4 form.
