Janice Yaklin Receives 2018 Commitment to Caring Award

The 2018 Commitment to Caring Award was presented to Janice Yaklin of the Cromaine District Library, Hartland.  The presentation was made at the Livingston County Senior Power Day, August 3, 2018, by Nancy Nawrocki of the Nawrocki Center for Elder Law.

The Commitment to Caring Award was originated by the Nawrocki Center in 2014 to honor people who have demonstrated commitment, care and service to the Livingston County Senior Community.  Janice is the fifth recipient of this annual award.

Janice was nominated for the award by Ceci Malow, Director of the Cromaine District Library.  Ceci cited Janice's service to the Senior community:

"In Janice's several years of servcie as an Adult Services Librarian of Cromaine District Library to the Hartland area community, she has consistently and respectfully provided reader advisory services in a compassionate and thoughtful manner.  When a senior has been unable to read conventional print, Janice has introduced them to large print and audiobooks.  When even holding a book becomes too tiring, Janice has introduced her reader to the services of the National Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.  She never fails to have spot-on recommendations for readers to keep reading.  She makes sure that, when books don't work, the Wall Street Journal or other forms of reading continue.

"Janice's primary audience has been the residents of the Village Manor Retirement Center.  She has also been the 'face' for LIvingston County's public libraries at most of the events targeted to our county's seniors and their caregivers.  At each event, she cheerfully presses gently used books in their hands, with information about health care, alonmg with a granola bar, candy, or apples.  And, Janice works tirelessly to assure the seniors she serves through the Hartland Senior Activity Center receive the library and technology services available to them.

"Our seniors' faces light up when they see Janice coming.  Her leadership for the A.L.I.V.E. 55+ program has made it a series of events that are filled almost upon publication.  The efforts she made to bring grandparents and grandchildren together in LCCOA-funded craft series made a huge difference in the number we now see of older adults at events with their grandchildren.  As a senior herself, Janice models the active, healthful lifestyle that she encourages in others.  Com to a Wednesday night concert and watch Janice dance and you'll witness the model she presents for active senior living."

Janice received a handsome trophy recognizing her award.  In addition, the Nawrocki Center will make a $500 donation to the Senior charity of her choice.
