Things to Do to Chase Away Winter Blues

John Steinbeck, a famous American author, once said, “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?”   Many a Michigander reminds himself of this when the days are cloudy and biting cold, and spring seems so far away.  After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, the short, dark days of January can feel very oppressive.  Here are some ideas to chase away the winter blues.

  • Go swimming! There are several local heated indoor pools that offer swim time, and most set aside time specifically for adults.
  • Start or join a book club. If you like to read, it can be very fulfilling to complete an enjoyable book by discussing it with others.  Book clubs also create an opportunity to gather socially and keep each other entertained as well as sharp.

  • Go for a walk! Not outdoors, but inside.  You can walk around a local mall or find a place like the Hartland Educational Support Center where you can either stroll through the hallways or walk the ¼ mile track.

  • Join a local senior center. There are so many activities from bingo to cards, art, music and exercise!  Spend time with other retirees.  Activities are geared for all levels of mobility.

  • Take a class. Learn a craft or a computer skill. Take a cooking class or learn a new language.  Learn to dance.  Learn something you always wanted to know about!

  • Work on your family tree or make a journal about your life. Where did you grow up?  What was your childhood like?  Where did you meet your spouse?  What a wonderful gift for children or grandchildren!

  • Grow something. Nurture an indoor garden.  Succulents are easy and aloe is nice to have around come summertime.  Try ferns or ivy too.  You could even make your own terrarium.

Whatever it is you decide to do, we hope it fills you with excitement and enthusiasm this winter.  And, in between all the fun activities and new hobbies, we hope you’ll take a few minutes and come see us.  We’ll review your estate planning so you can have peace of mind that you’re all set for the new year.  Call us at 810 229-0220 to schedule that appointment.  And may the upcoming decade be the best one ever!
