Celebrate National Better Breakfast Month!

September is National Better Breakfast Month.  Yes, you read that right.  So, who really cares?  We all should!  Eating a well-balanced diet is an important part of staying healthy as we age.  Getting the proper nutrients and maintaining a healthy weight will help us stay energized and lower our risk of developing chronic health problems or being vulnerable to disease.

As we age, our nutritional needs, appetite, and eating habits change.  Many older adults experience a diminished appetite and need fewer calories daily.  Medications can also increase or decrease appetite, and some drugs require avoidance of certain foods.  Poor oral health can also lead to changes in dietary habits.

According to the National Resource Center on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Aging, 1 in 4 older Americans has poor nutrition.  To meet your dietary needs, ensure you are eating foods that are rich in fiber, minerals, and other nutrients; limit foods that are high in processed sugars, saturated and trans fats, and salt; and be aware of how your medications may interact with certain foods.  Because our immune systems weaken as we age, be careful eating foods that have a higher risk of food-borne illnesses, such as those with raw eggs.

If you are finding it difficult to prepare your own healthy meals, talk to a family member, doctor, or other trusted advisor.  Depending on where you live, there may be services or other resources available to help make sure you’re getting the nutritional meals you need to stay healthy.  And, don’t forget to eat your breakfast!
