Help for Those Who Cannot Afford Their Medications

Help is available for the millions of people who have no insurance and can''t afford to purchase their medications. Many pharmaceutical companies provide prescription drugs free of charge to individuals who cannot otherwise pay for them, and many states have prescription assistance programs that may be age- or income-based.

To help the elderly, disabled and others locate these assistance programs, the non-profit Web site Disability Resources, Inc., has created a page of drug assistance program links.

The links include the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America''s guide to company programs that provide drugs to physicians whose patients could not otherwise afford them; a Long Island pharmacist''s home page that features a chart listing companies, program names, products covered, and telephone numbers; and a list of free or low-cost mental illness medications provided by pharmaceutical companies from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
