May is National Elder Law Month – A Time to Plan, Protect, and Prepare

Each May, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) designates this month as National Elder Law Month, shining a spotlight on the unique legal issues facing older adults and individuals with differing abilities. It is a timely reminder of the importance of thoughtful, proactive planning to safeguard one's future.

Elder Law is a specialized area of law focused on the needs of aging individuals and those with differing abilities. It encompasses a wide range of critical topics including estate planning, powers of attorney, guardianship, Medicaid and long-term care planning, and more. The goal is to ensure that individuals not only preserve their autonomy and dignity, but also take steps to protect their assets, themselves, and their loved ones as they age.

This month is the perfect opportunity to take action. Whether it is creating a comprehensive estate plan, establishing advance directives (powers of attorney), or planning for potential long-term care needs, early legal guidance can make all the difference. By working with an elder law attorney, individuals can gain peace of mind and ensure their wishes are clearly documented and honored.
