Covid-19 Claims Virginia ASNP Member Attorney Sheri Abrams at Age 53ASNP member Sheri R. Abrams, a leading Northern Virginia practitioner in the area of special needs law, died February 8 at age 53.  According to her family, she contracted Covid-19 during a recent hospitalization.

“The disability rights community has lost a dedicated advocate and friend,” said Mary Ford, executive director of the Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia.

Abrams worked for nearly a quarter-century in the areas of Social Security disability law, special needs planning, elder law and estate planning.  She was the founder and principal of Sheri R. Abrams, PLLC, a firm based in Oakton, Virginia. One of Abrams' main practice areas was Social Security disability appeals, and she was the author with Benjamin W. Glass of the book Don’t Gamble with Your Social Security Disability Benefits: What Every Virginia Resident Needs to Know to Win a Social Security Disability Case (Word Association, 2010).

Abrams was “AV-Rated” by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, and was named a “Super Lawyer,” one of the “Best Lawyers in America,” one of Virginia’s “Top Rated Lawyers” in the area of Social Security Disability Law and one of Virginia’s “Legal Elite” in the category of Legislative/Regulatory/Administrative.

Abrams was active in many professional organizations, including the Virginia State Bar, the District of Columbia Bar, the American Bar Association, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), and the National Organization of Social Security Claimant’s Representatives (NOSSCR), where she served on the Board of Directors from 2011 to 2013. In June 2013, she was elected to the Board of Directors of the Virginia Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (VAELA).  Abrams had been an ASNP member since 2016.

“She became my go-to person for people who needed legal advice for their differently-abled children," Fairfax, Virginia, attorney Bettina Lawton wrote on Abrams’ memories page. "The community will miss her advocacy and compassion.”

Abrams is survived by her son Andrew Abrams, her parents Howard and Arlene Abrams, her sister Lori Seidler, her niece Amanda Seidler and nephew Maxwell Seidler.
